Fukuoka is home to one of Japan’s most vibrant food and drink scenes, populated by warm people with discerning eyes. The coffee culture is equally rich, boasting small independent cafes, award-winning baristas and roasteries. Since opening our first Fukuoka shop near Hakata Station in 2022, it has been a wonderful journey. Yet, we were also seeking a standalone building in a location closer to the heart of the city—a place where we could dive deeper into the everyday life of the local community. Fuglen Keyaki Dori is a long-awaited project that aims to do exactly that. Situated in the tranquil Akasaka area, within walking distance of the lush Ohori Park, our Fukuoka flagship is where we showcase coffee, cocktails and vintage design—the three pillars at the core of our business since the beginning—in its entirety. The cosy neighbourhood is peppered with independent local businesses and residential properties. Here, we are open daily from 07:00 until late, providing our unique day-to-night experiences. The name? Opened December 2025 A ten-minute walk from Daitoku-ji temple, Fuglen Kyoto is a small coffee stand situated on Kitayama Dori in the tranquil residential neighbourhood called Shichiku. Away from the bustling city centre, it’s a cosy area with a sense of neighbourhood where the time flows at Kyoto pace.&nbsp;Here, we took over the former site of a local Japanese confectionery shop that had a small factory in the back. The coffee bar has a small table seating and bar counters complete with outdoor benches. We are open from 7am to 6pm everyday, serving coffee, tea and pastries, as well as a small selection of beer and wine. &nbsp; The interior is based on our signature Norwegian mid-century design, but we didn’t add too much decor with respect to the history and character of the original structure. We’re here for the long run; we want to connect and learn from Kyoto, drawing from the local culture. We’d also like to slowly build relationships with Kyoto’s celebrated craftspeople to develop our new home into something unique to this place. We have to give a warm thanks to Ami and Shin Mononobe, our local partners in Kyoto. The couple, who had just acquired the building when we first spoke with them, welcomed us and made this project possible and amazing. Ami is a jewellery designer, while Shin runs a branding and design studio. Although our coffee bar is the only public space in the building, behind the wall sits Ami’s atelier and Shin’s office. Also on the basement floor, there is Ami’s jewellery shop called Ausome that is open by appointment. Also, our unique cafe-by-day and bar-by-night style, complete with vintage Norwegian furniture, has won us strong fans across Japan and Asia as many people visit our cafes in Tokyo from overseas. “As Fuglen has been growing organically with a quality first approach over the last twenty-three years under my direction and ownership, we will continue to take this at a steady pace. Our first Jakarta location is relatively small, designed to allow us to find a format and alignment with the local market culture. We have taken over a single-storey standalone structure in a quieter corner located at the end of the Hongdae District by Sangsu station and refurbished it into the classic Fuglen space. Here, we showcase the signature Fuglen style from Oslo: specialty coffee, cocktails and vintage design. Cafe-by-day and bar-by-night. The interior is kitted out with authentic Norwegian decors including mid-century Norwegian furniture, Biri wallpapers and lamps we have sourced from Norway. We also have outdoor seating available for our guests to enjoy both in front of the coffee bar and on the rooftop patio. We opened Fuglen Sangūbashi in January 2024, transforming a 59-year-old wooden house into a space for customers to slow down and savour coffee. Fuglen Sangūbashi, our sixth outpost in Japan, is a fresh departure from all the other Fuglen cafes. The concept is to pursue the essence of coffee beans at the deepest level. Here, we use the same coffee beans we have at our other locations, but we extract richer tastes, aromas and textures from them. Since we established our own roasting operation in Japan in 2014, we have been managing every process in-house from sourcing to brewing, which led us to realise that high quality coffee beans have truly rich characters. But, there is a limit on the time and equipment to make a cup of coffee for each customer in a standard cafe operation. We created Fuglen Sangūbashi as a place to draw out the maximum potential from our coffee beans by taking extra time and steps in preparation and brewing. The menu is pared-back: coffee courses and a cup of special hand-brew. And to provide a total experience, we finished the interior with natural materials as much as possible. On the counter, where we serve each customer, lies the Daté Kan stone; the basalt formed twenty million years ago was shaped by craftspeople at Okurayama Studio in Miyagi prefecture. The cups were made especially for us by potters Genta Yamamoto in Hoshino village, Fukuoka, and Yui Kato in Yomitan village, Okinawa. The room is dimly lit to let the handiwork speak for themselves in natural light, which creates different moods throughout the day and year. This is a small gem located located south of Hanegi Park, where you can enjoy the vast number of beautiful plum blossoms in spring. The park also allows you to feel the changes of the seasons throughout the year. With Akazutsumi street on one side and a nature stroll path on the other, on sunny days the sunlight shines through the cafe beautifully.
